Dutch journalists go global by 'roasting' new United States ambassador

The new US ambassador to the Netherlands made mistakes and feels great remorse for falsely saying two years ago that Muslim migrants had "burned" politicians and created "no-go zones" in Holland, a State Department official said on Thursday.

A State Department official said on Thursday that Hoekstra made mistakes and feels great remorse for falsely claiming two years ago that Muslim migrants had "burned" politicians and created "no-go zones" in Holland.

Hoekstra is known for being a particularly conservative Republican politician who is against gay marriage, opposed to legalized abortion in all circumstances, and supports U.S. President Donald Trump's attempts to ban entry into the U.S. from citizens of several countries with large Muslim populations.

With the help of an aide, he tried to move onto another topic, but other journalists continued to ask similar questions, such as for examples of a Dutch politician who had been burned in recent years.

A short video posted on Twitter by Roel Geeraedts, a political reporter at the Dutch RTL Nieuws TV news channel, shows reporters asking Hoekstra why he refuses to answer their questions and insisting that "it is not how it works" in the Netherlands. "Yes or no", one asked.

"I've expressed my regrets and look forward to moving on", ambassador Peter Hoekstra said only hours after presenting his credentials to King Willem-Alexander, adding he would not be "revisiting the issue".

"There are cars being burned". Are politicians being burned in the Netherlands in the past? A silence followed but was broken when Hoekstra replied "thank you".

In late December, Hoekstra apologized for telling a Dutch journalist that he was peddling "fake news" when Hoekstra was the one caught telling untruths. Hoekstra falsely claimed to Zwart that he had never made the remarks and called them "fake news".

"We were all astonished that he didn't want to take back the comment".

Video of the freakish exchange, juxtaposed with his "no-go zone" remarks, went viral, and the episode drew a slew of critical headlines in the United States and the Netherlands.

He takes up the post as United States envoy left vacant for two years, and as immigration is set to again be a hot-button issue in the Dutch local elections due on March 21. "Please accept my apology", he wrote.

"The Ambassador did not answer some of the questions that were asked of him".

In 2017, Hoekstra maintained that 10 or 15 percent of Muslims could be part of a "radical jihadist, Islamic force", while in 2016 he chastised former presidents Bush and Obama for calling Islam a peaceful religion, CNN reported.
