WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange granted Ecuadorian nationality

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange granted Ecuadorian nationality

Assange also offended potential supporters in the Democratic Party by allowing WikiLeaks to become the conduit for emails hacked by Russian Federation from the Democratic National Committee that were meant to harm the presidential candidacy of Hillary Clinton.

Assange initially sought refuge in the embassy after Sweden sought to have him arrested in connection with allegations of rape and assault.

Swedish prosecutors dropped their charges against Assange past year, but British police have said they are prepared to arrest him for breaching bail conditions. "He also fears a possible USA extradition request based on his leaking of classified State Department documents". The Wikileaks founder has been claiming political asylum at the Ecuadorean embassy in London since 2012.

U.S. intelligence officials have blamed Russian Federation, something WikiLeaks has denied.

Assange also faces a possible sealed USA indictment against him.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Espinosa said officials were looking for a third country or a prominent worldwide figure to help extricate Assange from the embassy and move him somewhere else.

He only very rarely emerges on the balcony, citing concerns for his personal safety, but frequently takes part in media conferences and campaigns via video link.

He make a speech, calling for the government to 'drop the witch-hunt against WikiLeaks.

The new citizenship status, however, appears to change little for Assange in the immediate future.

But don't count on it happening anytime soon.

According to the WikiLeaks website, its goal is "to bring important news and information to the public".

In 2006, he made headlines for leaking confidential documents and images such as a footage in which United States soldiers were seen shooting dead 18 civilians from a helicopter in Iraq.

He came to worldwide attention in 2010 when WikiLeaks published a series of leaked sensitive documents.

In March 2017, WikiLeaks released documents showing how the CIA exploits vulnerabilities in popular computer and networking hardware and software to gather intelligence. However, he is still facing an arrest warrant in London for failure to surrender to the court in 2012. He was granted asylum, and has been holed up in the embassy ever since.

Assange's legal team have maintained his confinement to the embassy amounts to illegal detention. Both countries dismissed the report.
