Pakistan army chief says nation felt 'betrayed' by U.S. criticism

Several U.S. officials have met with senior Pakistani civilian and military leaders to find what one called "common ground" after President Trump rebuked Pakistan in a series of New Years Day Twitter posts, and then said the U.S. would no longer provide aid to Islamabad.

In the weeks since the Trump administration withheld almost $1 billion in security aid for Pakistan, Washington and Islamabad officials have been working to patch things up and avert a risky deterioration in their often troubled relations.

USA and Pakistani officials say neither has happened, and in conversations over the past week the two sides have tried to move past Trump's incendiary rhetoric. "We're hopeful for future cooperation from Pakistan", Steve Goldstein, US Under Secretary of State said in a statement. Bajwa also said Pakistan is being treated badly by the United States "despite decades of cooperation,"Sputnik News reports".

Pakistan's army chief told a top US general the nation "felt betrayed" by criticism that it was not doing enough to fight terrorism, the Pakistani military said on Friday, after US President Donald Trump accused Pakistan of "lies and deceit".

Votel also told Bajwa the "US is not contemplating any unilateral action inside Pakistan", it continued.

Should he become Pakistan's prime minister, Khan said "yes we would talk", referring to Trump, but added that the USA dishonors the memory of thousands of Pakistan's soldiers who died battling insurgents in its tribal regions, as well as that of tens of thousands of Pakistanis who died in terrorist attacks.

Trump has been less charitable towards Pakistan.

Spokesman Colonel John Thomas said Centcom is in "continuous communication" with the Pakistan military, including recurring conversations between Votel and Bajwa.

USA military leaders are continuing to maintain close with their counterparts in despite the White House's latest round of harsh economic sanctions against the South Asian nation.

Also in question is nearly $1 billion of USA military equipment that has allowed Pakistan access to advanced military technology.

This gave rise to a growing choir of voices in Pakistan who are urging the government to suspend the US' transit rights through their territory en route to Afghanistan, effectively dealing a major blow to Trump's mini-surge there, while others have said that Islamabad should massively raise its transit fees instead in order to recoup its losses.
