What is Google Play (Android Market)? - Definition from WhatIs.com - SearchMobileComputing

"We've removed the apps from Play, disabled the developers' accounts, and will continue to show strong warnings to anyone that has installed them", a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Checkpoint's on the malware warns it shows pornographic ads which would obscure the actual game, including one featuring a picture of Kim Kardashian - fittingly, the code is called AdultSwine. Google has said that the company manually reviews ads and has strict category checks to help children have a safe experience.

Check Point said AdultSwine caused pornographic images to pop up during the children's games, including in a car-racing game named after the Disney cartoon character Lightning McQueen, which according to Google data had been downloaded at least 500,000 times. "Along with encouraging users to download scareware and pay for premium services, "AdultSwine' also stole credentials", the Check Point researchers noted".

Despite significant efforts from Google, the Google Play Store is regularly hit by malware outbreaks that affect unsuspecting users.

In late August of a year ago, Google announced some updates to its Android Wear policy which would affect the requirements for an app to obtain an "Enhanced for Android Wear" badge. We advise parents to verify that apps used by their children are categorized as "Designed for Families" on Google Play.

Google has now removed these apps from Play store.

Researchers at Check Point found that 63 apps were affected.

Meanwhile, once the malicious app is installed on the device, it waits for a boot to occur or for a user to unlock his screen, upon which it initiates its malicious activity.

Check Point said it expected AdultSwine and similar malware to be repeated and imitated by hackers, warning users to be extra vigilant when installing apps, especially those intended for use by children.

The new policy would require apps to work as standalone Wear apps and force Wear APKs to be uploaded to the Play Store as a multi-APK instead of bundling them within phone apps.

Apple's App Store does contend with malware but, due in large part to tighter restrictions and a far smaller number of apps and users, the iOS App Store appears to be hit less frequently with malware outbreaks than its Android counterpart.
