Manchester United pay tribute to victims of Munich air disaster

In a letter recently penned to Manchester United's current crop of players ahead of a tribute to those who died in the Munich air disaster, Sir Bobby Charlton wrote: "Words can not describe the devastating effect that this had on the football club and the lives of those affected". Today we remember and pay our respects to all those we sadly lost. Fittingly, Charlton - by now the Manchester United captain - scored twice in a 4-1 win, making United the first English club to lift the coveted trophy.

The Munich air disaster on 6 February, 1958 claimed the lives of 23 people, including some of the best soccer players of their generation - Duncan Edwards, Roger Byrne and Tommy Taylor.

Longford based photographer Michael Croghan explained, "All supporters inside the ground received a complimentary copy of United Review and a special hardback book, before a surfer banner was unveiled at the Stretford End in tribute to the legendary Busby Babes".

Tuesday's service will include a minute's silence at 3.04pm, the exact time of the disaster.

A number of United supporters made the journey to Munich on the anniversary of the air disaster to lay plaques and sing Flowers of Manchester on the site of the tragedy in tribute to those who passed away.

In their first foray into Europe to participate in the newly formed European Cup a relatively inexperienced United side had reached the semi-finals 12 months before, eventually losing out to the formidable Real Madrid side which featured the likes of Alfredo Di Stéfano; but a year on they now they had the chance to prove their worth once more against the continent's elite. I played, and at one point Liam gave me a lovely pass that meant I couldn't miss.

'A member of my media team inadvertently replied to a tweet this afternoon on my Twitter profile during the Munich memorial service at Old Trafford, ' a post from Lingard read. I didn't realise what had happened.

Ferguson also talked about how United rose back again after the tragedy and the legandary "Busby Babes".

Thousands of people turned out for memorial ceremonies in Manchester and Munich on Tuesday to mark the 60th anniversary of the air disaster which killed eight of the Manchester United team of the day.

"Today marks an important and sombre anniversary in the history of this great city", she said.

Vladica Popovic played for Red Star against United in 1958 and will be at the reception hosted in the same hotel that Busby and his side used 60 years ago. "The crew, journalists and, of course, the talented footballers who died that day will never be forgotten".
