Natalie Wood mystery: Police looking to question husband Robert Wagner

Natalie Wood mystery: Police looking to question husband Robert Wagner

"He has rights, and he cannot talk to us if he doesn't want to". Detectives said Wagner and Wood went to the back of the boat and there was more screaming then it went quiet.

Re-opened in 2011, 30 years after investigators initially ruled her death accidental, it is now turning another page as her then-husband actor Robert Wagner is being sought for interrogation.

On Monday, following another boost in lurid publicity about the case provided by CBS News' 48 Hours on Saturday, a team of sheriff's detectives appeared at a press conference in Los Angeles to appeal for somebody - anybody - to come forward to help them explain the case they're convinced is "suspicious" but they've been unable to solve for almost four decades.

Lt Corina said: "I think, before, we were all believing this story that she must have gotten in a dinghy and tried to go into town in her nightgown, in her socks, by herself when it is raining out and the seas are really rough - you can't even see at midnight - which made absolutely no sense if you really think about it". "I mean, we know now that he was the last person to be with Natalie before she disappeared".

In a statement released last Thursday, the department said after their 2011 press conference, they received "more than 100 tips and we followed up on every single one".

Officials have also confirmed that the actress' drowning is being treated as "suspicious" after new witnesses came forward.

Renewed interest came this week when the lead detective in the case said her widower, actor Robert Wagner, now 87, is considered a person of interest.

So investigators returned to a tried-and-true strategy: Goose up the publicity with the help of the media and wait for new tips to come rolling in, despite the length of time that has elapsed.

This comes as a new CBS documentary titled 48 Hours offered a "behind the headlines" look at Wood's death.

"We can't make him".

"We have a better understanding now of what happened", Corina said.

In this December 1, 2013 file photo, Robert Wagner attends The Caucus for Producers, Writers and Directors 31st Annual Awards in Beverly Hills.

Wagner, who was married to Wood at the time of her death, was described by the sheriff's department last week as a person of interest in her drowning death off the coast of Santa Catalina island in November 1981. "I can swim a little bit, but I'm afraid of water that is dark".

The actor returned to CBS drama NCIS for several episodes and was featured in the 2016 Hollywood Christmas Parade. He said the key to deciding if it becomes a murder investigation is finding out how Wood got in the water - did she fall accidentally or was she put in the water.

Speculation continues to swirl around the death of the 43-year-old actress, who was nominated for three Academy Awards and starred in West Side Story and Rebel Without a Cause.

Before becoming the subject of a Hollywood mystery, Natalie Wood was considered one of the most attractive and talented women in the world.

Reiterating that Wagner was not a suspect, Lt. Corina said, "We can never force him to talk to us, suspect or not".

Reuters was referred by Wagner's publicist to his lawyer, who did not reply to requests for comment. More than 36 years later, investigators are looking to question her husband, saying his account doesn't "add up".
