Court jails ex-Bangladeshi PM Khaleda Zia

Zia is now disqualified from contesting the upcoming national elections in December.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met Zia in Dhaka in October 2017, even though a section of the Awami League said that she should not meet her.

The jail sentence may mean the 72-year-old is barred from parliamentary polls due later this year.

A special court found the two-time former prime minister guilty of embezzling money meant for an orphanage, a charge she had dismissed as politically motivated.

BNP secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the graft case against Khaleda Zia, who was given a five-year sentence on Thursday, was "influenced by political vengeance". The punishment for a conviction is life in prison.

According to Bangladesh law, individuals imprisoned for more than two years can not run for office for the next five years.

The possibility of the absence of Khaleda from the political amphitheatre may be significant for the BNP as political parties in Bangladesh - except the Jamaat-e-Islami, which is a religion-based political outfit - can not survive without faces.

The opposition says the verdict is a government plot to remove her from politics.

For now, the three-time prime minister will have to stay in jail for at least three days.

"It is a false case and a tool to harass me and my family". "The main evidence for this case is totally created".

Bangladesh law says anyone imprisoned for more than two years can not run for office for the next five years, but Mr Huq noted that the final decision rests with the courts. We have given all the accused the legal freedom to contest the case and, after having looked into the evidence, the court has given a judgment.

AL lawmaker Fazilatunnesa Bappy said Khaleda was identified as a "cheat" and the verdict was "historic" and "exemplary" for establishing the rule of law and right of orphans.

Ahead of the hearing police fired tear gas at thousands of opposition activists who defied heavy security to escort the vehicle taking Zia to the magistrates court.

Earlier, thousands of opposition activists, in support of the former prime minister, before the verdict took to the streets to protest, disregarding a ban on rallies by the countries police. These include former lawmaker Quazi Salimul Haq, former principal secretary to Zia, Kamal Uddin Siddique, her nephew Mominur Rahman and pro-BNP businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed. Zia is the widow of Ziaur Rahman, a general-turned-president who was assassinated in 1981.
