Austria's David Gleirscher wins shocking gold in men's singles luge

Mazdzer won silver in the men's singles luge - becoming the first American to medal in the event.

Surprise package David Gleirscher claimed Austria's first Olympic luge gold in 50 years at the Pyeongchang Games on Sunday after 2014 champion Felix Loch stumbled dramatically with his third successive title in sight.

The luge event is four runs, and after the first two, Mazdzer was fourth, just 0.001 seconds behind Roman Repilov of Russian Federation.

After a shaky start on his final run, the Vancouver and Sochi Olympic gold medalist made contact with the wall and lost all momentum, tumbling to a fifth-place overall finish. But it was only with his second and third runs - which he finished second and first, respectively - that Mazdzer climbed the leader board.

Roman Repilov, an Olympic Athlete from Russian Federation, was in third place entering the final two runs and faltered on his third run to allow Mazdzer to leapfrog him as well.

(L-R) Chris Mazdzer, David Gleirscher and Johannes Ludwig celebrate after watching the final run of Felix Loch in the luge men's singles at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang on February 11, 2018 in PyeongChang, South Korea.

The three-time Olympian, 29, trains in Lake Placid. Finland beat one of the Olympic favorites, Canada, at last year's world championships and led 1-0 after the first period but the USA scored twice in the second period and outshot Finland 23-5 en route to the win.

In his third Winter Games, he finished 13th in 2010 and 2014, Mazdzer broke through with the performance he had been searching for on the world's biggest stage. "We like bronze, we like silver". "Training wheels are off".

"It was like a home track for me". For the Olympics, you've just got to go for it. ...

Any medal finish would be a huge accomplishment for Mazdzer, whose best finish in the recent World Cup was sixth place despite being ranked No. 3 in the world during the 2015-2016 season.

Chris Mazdzer made history Sunday night at the Alpensia Sliding Centre in PyeongChang.

"You can either give up or you can keep pushing on", Mazdzer said. And yeah, I'm incredibly happy with where I am right now.

It's no surprise, Mazdzer's second run was the fastest in that heat demonstrating he was capable of medaling.
