Mick Mulvaney denies that he's being considered to replace John Kelly

But later in the day, the White House dealt far more aggressively with another allegation of abuse. Although he publicly acknowledged Obama's citizenship in September 2016, Trump reportedly continued to privately question it as recently as November 2017.

ABC host George Stephanopoulos noted during an interview with Conway on This Week that there is "pattern" with President Donald Trump's view of women. Shah also repeatedly declined to get into specifics about how much the White House knew past year about the allegations against Porter.

Speier feels Trump's lack of defense of victims runs contrary to the momentum behind more people speaking out against violence against women.

White House spokesman Raj Shah said Thursday that the White House "could have done better" over the last few days in "dealing with" the domestic violence allegations against Porter.

He, however, vehemently denied the allegations and said "she was the one who victimized him", according to reports.

Short acknowledged Sunday that the Porter matter exposed "some lack of communication" within the White House, but he said the well-regarded aide was "out" shortly after officials became aware of the extent of the abuse allegations.

He made no mention of the ex-wives or the alleged domestic abuse.

It also drew an inflamed reaction, as people took to social media to note that Mr Trump used similar arguments to defend Roy S Moore, the Republican candidate who lost his bid for an Alabama Senate seat after being accused of child predation, and Bill O'Reilly, the disgraced TV personality who, along with his former employer, Fox News, paid tens of millions of dollars to settle sexual harassment claims.

"It so clearly illustrates that even today, in 2018, a lot of people react to these sorts of allegations by assuming that the woman is lying, or by indicating that, in essence, how a man behaves with women is nobody's business, that it's irrelevant", said Emily Martin, National Women's Law Center general counsel and vice president for education and workplace justice.

"He says he's innocent, and I think you have to remember that".

Porter's first wife said he kicked her and posted an image of herself with a black eye, which she says she received from Porter punching her.

Those efforts appear to have succeeded for months, at least in part because of the willingness of a virtually all-male staff in the top echelons of the West Wing to believe a talented male colleague over women they had never met.

Porter told him about the possible allegations because he was concerned that what he characterized as false charges from aggrieved women who were out to destroy him could derail his Federal Bureau of Investigation background check, according to one of the two people briefed on the matter.

Just like Porter, Sorensen strongly denies the allegations. Most West Wing offices remained dark.

"We're all saddened by this", Short said.

Kelly went on to say that he had learned of Porter's true situation less than an hour before he removed him from his job.
