Eric Radford becomes first openly gay Winter Olympian to win gold

Figure skater Eric Radford won one for the Canadian - and the Rainbow - flags, becoming the first openly gay winter Olympian to take home a gold medal.

Radford and teammate Meagan Duhamel partnered to win the pairs free skate program.

"If you have the wrong piece of music and it doesn't connect with the audience or the judges, it doesn't really matter how great you skate", Radford told CBC Radio. "You're gonna be missing something".

Eric Radford skated with partner Meagan Duhamel for Canada on the weekend, while Adam Rippon skated solo for the U.S. this morning.

Elsewhere in the team event, gay skater Adam Rippon made history for Team USA by taking a bronze medal after performing a solo skate to Coldplay's O and Arrival of the Birds by Cinematic Orchestra. But Radford's win signals a major first in the Winter Games, which had previously hosted LGBTQ athletes, but never a gold medalist.

Angela Ruggiero, the head of the International Olympics Committee's Athletes Commission, praised Radford's "fantastic" achievement. Mitcham earned gold in the 10-meter platform at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Radford came out in the same year that he won a silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russian Federation.

"But I put myself in the position of a young kid, who might be afraid to follow their own dream". Not just bullying but people who just thought I couldn't make it, people in skating who don't like how Meagan and I skate, people who say we don't deserve the marks we get.
