Google Announces AMP Stories for Creatives

The tool builds on Google's Accelerated Mobile Pages project, which was created to speed-up mobile pages, and looks similar to the popular "Stories" formats used by Snapchat and Instagram. AMP Stories will be available to all publishers and are being released as a "free and open" experience.

According to The Verge, developers will be able to make emails 'more interactive and engaging through the AMP for Email feature. AMP Stories are meant to be "bite-sized", visually engaging content constructed primarily of interactive photos and text. Called AMP Stories, the feature is basically a clone of what Snapchat and Instagram are doing with stories on their respective platforms. Google says that "at a later point, Google plans to bring AMP stories to more products across Google, and expand the ways they appear in Google Search".

Like AMP pages, AMP Stories will not be easy as you will have to build Stores from scratch to keep it interesting. Until then, here's a video of what AMP Stories should look like. From there, you'll be presented with a full-screen presentation of pictures, videos, and text similar to what you'd find on Instagram and Snapchat.

The publishers which have been working with Google in developing AMP stories for the web are; Time Warner's CNN, Hearst, Mashable, Meredith, Mic, Vox Media and Washington Post.

The format comes with preset but flexible layout templates, standardised UI controls, and components for sharing and adding follow-on content. Other email clients may adopt AMP for Email as well. That said, if you'd like to get an early look, you can sign up for developer preview access for your Gmail account on the company's website. Considering the users Google's search engine sustains, it's possible AMP Stories might just take off.

AMP Stories are live on Google Search starting Tuesday. A new AMP for Email specification is being added, which promises to take regular emails and make them arguably even more annoying and attention-hungry. AMP Stories are available from today but only on mobile browsers. Outlets controlled by these corporations have since started creating stories for the mobile web.
