United States Hockey Team Allows Slovenians to Believe in Miracles

Mursak, a Red Wings draft pick who played for the team for parts of three seasons, scored the game-tying goal late in the third and then netted the game-winner in overtime to lift Slovenia to a surprising 3-2 win over the USA on Wednesday morning. But a goal by Mursak, who slipped the puck slip a puck past US goaltender Ryan Zapolski with one minute, 37 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime.

Brian O'Neill scored in the first period and Jordan Greenway added a goal in the second to put the U.S.in front 2-0. As a result, he ended up signing a one day contract to the Rochester Americans to play one game in front of his hometown crowd before he shipped off to South Korea.

After a feeling-out period in the first few minutes and American defenseman Noah Welch sliding in front of a wide-open net for the save of the game, the USA began drawing penalties with its speed and then found a way to cash in.

In the 3-on-3 overtime, Mursak got free on the doorstep and scored high over American goalie Ryan Zapolski less than a minute into the extra frame. The U.S. netminder had very little chance to stop either deciding goal.

Pyeongchang - The Men's Olympic tournament is now underway and the 1st day of it has proved why it's totally worth it watching. Download the Team USA app today. It became razor thin 5:49 into the third when Gregorc beat Zapolski to get Slovenia on the board. "It's a good team, I'll give them credit".

"Hopefully, we can start looking to the next game and surprise somebody else".

It was the first win for Slovenia over the United States in Olympic men's ice hockey. A part of Yugoslavia until 1991, Slovenia did not qualify for an Olympic ice hockey tournament until 2014 but finished a respectable seventh in Sochi.

Mursak, who now plays for Frolunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League, was selected by the Red Wings in the sixth round of the 2006 NHL Draft.

With captain Brian Gionta off for tripping, the USA got a couple of scares when Slovenia hit the post early on the power play and then nearly scored moments later.

Both Team USA and Canada are unbeaten in the group stage so far, so somebody will leave the game with their first loss.

The game starts at 10:10 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on NBCSN.
