Teens have lost interest in Facebook, report

Until now it has been able to rely on platform shifters being hoovered up by Instagram [which Facebook bought for $1 billion in 2012].

Facebook even said it was expecting a drop in 12-17-year-olds in 2017, but the reality of just how many would leave was a lot more - three times more, actually.

A 5.6 percent decline in users between 12- and 17-years-old. "This is the first time eMarketer has predicted a decline in the number of U.S. Facebook users in those age groups".

Facebook is surging in popularity among the over-55s, while teenagers and young adults are ditching the social network, a new report has revealed.

Facebook Inc.is losing its swagger with young users, who are increasingly migrating to rival platforms including Snapchat, according to a new study.

The social network is still growing but will rely on growth in older age groups. eMarketer predicts Facebook's total USA growth will be just 1 percent this year, similar to the growth it saw in the US and Canada in 2017.

Overall about 2.8 million U.S. users under the age of 25 stopped using Facebook.

Facebook still has 1.4 billion daily active users globally and Instagram has more than 500 million, while Snapchat has 187 million daily active users. Meanwhile, Facebook could lose 2 million in that same demographic, CNBC reports.

The shift is also interesting in light of Facebook incorporating several of Snapchat's unique features on its various subsidiary sites like Instagram.

But there's more factors at play than just immediacy and visual content. Facebook has arguably become "your parent's" social media platform, an institution that's both household name and household utility.

Teens still use Facebook a great deal, for whatever cause it may be, it is still a visited page, but, over the years and the increase of popular social media platforms, Facebook is definitely no longer seen as the most important or prestigious social network amongst this age group.

"That's why it's uncool to that group who is 14 years old and they want to share what they're doing with their friends but they don't want grandma to see", said Molly Lynch, founder of Chicago-based Lynch Communications Group.

Writer and social media addict.

Stateside, Instagram is still bigger than Snapchat.

The number of total Facebook users in the United States will reach 169.5 million this year, up just under 1 per cent from 2017. "That's the predicament Facebook is in", the report noted.

Instagram's user base in the U.S.is estimated to grow 13.1 percent in 2018 compared to 9.3-percent growth for Snapchat.
