Sonos One Speaker Can Also Leave White Marks on Wood Furniture

Sonos One Speaker Can Also Leave White Marks on Wood Furniture

In an explanation posted Wednesday, Apple said the problem occurs with speakers that, like the HomePod, are equipped with a silicon base to minimize vibration.

Staingate (as some people have chose to call it) was reported in Wirecutter's HomePod review today. The smart speaker has some shortcomings, and the fact that it may damage wooden furniture is the latest to be added to that list.

If the issue is as common as it appears to be among speakers (and HomePod is only getting the heat because it's receiving Apple-level attention), ideally the hope is that Apple can innovate in this space and produce a solution that sounds good while not damaging common surfaces.

One user tweeted Apple that the new speaker left "etched circles" on their wooden furniture within 20 minutes of use, while others found the speaker left deeper and more obvious marks in several places and on several different types of wooden surface. I had the Sonos Ones sitting on top of a pair of speakers with a clear coat, and no white marks were apparent. Recently, we learned that the smart speaker is hard to fix and the cost to get it repaired could be as much as buying a new HomePod (when out of warranty or for damage that is not covered).

Early reviewers at Wirecutter and Pocket-Lint noticed that the HomePod was leaving rings on wooden tables and countertops.

HomePod is Apple's answer to Amazon's Echo and Google Home.

After Apple officially launched the HomePod this month, the official YouTube account of its support group already released a total of three video tutorials on how to operate Apple's newest gadget. This is quite unfortunate especially since the HomePods are not meant to be kept on soft surfaces.

Apple told Wirecutter that treating the stained surface with the manufacturer's oil cleaning method should do the trick. Apple recommends placing the speaker on a different surface. Unfortunately, users of the smart speaker have noticed that it leaves distinct white rings behind when sat on wooden surfaces for a period of time.

Apple seems to have taken note, now including on its website details on where to place the smart speaker.
