Bipartisan group of senators aim to end USA military involvement in Yemen

Bipartisan group of senators aim to end USA military involvement in Yemen

As a result of the Saudi-led war, a child younger than the age of five in Yemen dies of preventable causes every 10 minutes, the senators said in arguing for the resolution.

More than 9,200 people have been killed and tens of thousands wounded in Yemen's three-year-old war, which is seen as both a civil conflict and a proxy war between regional titans Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Lee said lawmakers must address the use of military force "conflict by conflict", instead of a broad new bill.

"This March, with senators set to vote on whether to end the illegal US war in Yemen, millions of lives hang in the balance". USA forces are coordinating, refueling, and providing targeting guidance and intelligence to the Saudi-led coalition, as confirmed recently by Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis. The poll also found that 67.4% of voters "disapprove of congressional leadership allowing our involvement in conflict overseas without formally approving military action". "What few Americans know, however, is that the USA military is making the crisis worse by helping one side in the conflict bomb innocent civilians". For nearly three years, we have offered logistical and intelligence support to Saudi Arabia and eight other mostly Sunni Arab states in Yemen fighting to restore Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi's government.

The move follows a resolution passed past year in the House which, among other things, acknowledged that American involvement in Yemen has not been specifically authorized by Congress.

The bill intends to exploit a powerful but rarely activated provision in a 1973 law - the War Powers Act - that gives Congress the authority to overrule the president and withdraw troops if the former believes the conflict is not authorised.

The Senate effort will be referred to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and is guaranteed a vote under the International Security and Arms Export Control Act of 1976, they said. If reported or discharged from committee, the motion to proceed to the measure is privileged.

It remains unclear whether Senate leadership could stave off a floor vote.

Mike Lee, R-Utah, on the latest bipartisan resolution to end U.S. support for the Saudi-led war against the Houthis in Yemen.

In response, the USA has provided support for the Saudi campaign. A recent study conducted by Committee for a Responsible Foreign Policy found that 57 percent of Americans feel that USA military aid to foreign countries is "counterproductive" to protecting our interests and security.

The United Nations says a record 22.2 million people across Yemen are in need of food aid, including 8.4 million threatened by severe hunger. "This horror is caused in part by our decision to facilitate a bombing campaign that is murdering children, and to endorse a Saudi strategy inside Yemen that is deliberately using disease and starvation and the withdrawal of humanitarian support as a tactic".
