State approves Javelin missile sale to Ukraine

The Trump administration intends to sell 210 Javelin anti-tank missiles and 37 launch units to the Ukrainian government, The Washington Post is reporting.

Ukraine has long sought to boost its defenses against Russian-backed separatists armed with tanks that have rolled through eastern Ukraine during violence that has killed more than 10,000 since 2014.

Following a report in December that the U.S. State Department was aiming to provide Ukraine with "enhanced defensive capabilities" in order to help "defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity and deter further aggression", officials this week have reportedly finalized the deal and the proposition is headed to Congress.

State Department makes determination approving Javelin missile sale to UkrainePoltorak said the weapons would help the Ukrainian military respond to attacks that he said Russian Federation was responsible for coordinating. The missiles will come from existing U.S. Army stockpiles, probably those that are already stationed in Europe, speeding up the process for transferring them to Ukraine's military. Military officials tell the network news the sale is meant to bolster Ukraine's military forces in the fight against separatists.

The deal will require U.S. government and/or contractor representatives to travel to Ukraine temporarily in order to conduct training, the release explained.

Since the latter stages of the Obama administration, congressional defense authorizers have called on the United States to provide defensive lethal assistance to Ukraine.

However, Russia has repeatedly warned against supplies of lethal arms to Ukraine, saying that such actions would exacerbate the conflict in the country's eastern Donbass region.

Meanwhile, Alexander Zakharchenko, the head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, confirmed last August that the supply of U.S. lethal weapons would nearly certainly result in an escalation of the conflict.

The FGM-148 Javelin is a US-made fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile in used in dozen of countries around the world.
