Police investigate why student at Central Michigan University gunned down his parents

A 19-year-old student suspected of killing his parents at a Central Michigan University dormitory had been acting so strangely the day before that campus police called his mother and then took him to a hospital for suspected drug abuse, authorities said yesterday.

James Eric Davis Jr., a 19-year-old sophomore, was arrested early Saturday after he was seen on a train passing through the north end of campus, the university said.

Davis Jr. was taken to a local hospital, where he remained under custody Saturday morning, Yeagley added.

University police Chief Bill Yeagley told reporters that James Eric Davis Jr.'s parents had just picked him up from that hospital and brought him to his dorm to pack up for spring break when Friday's shooting happened.

Parents and others expected on campus on Friday to pick up students for spring break were told to stay away while the suspect was at large.

Davis Sr. was a part-time police officer in Bellwood, Illinois, and Yeagley said the gun used by Davis Jr. belonged to his father.

An officer asked Davis, Jr.to call his parents and Yeagley said the officer spoke to his mother about what they observed and shared concern that it might be drugs.

Yet Yeagley said that when officers determined that the person posed no threat - and reviewed video from the elevator that showed Davis and that person laughing and no sign of a threat - Davis said he was fine and was leaving campus Friday for spring break.

Yeagley said the gun's presence on campus was a violation of CMU's weapons policy, which states only campus law enforcement or officers with approval are able to be on campus armed. "The hurting will go on for a while", Ross said. Davis Jr. said the person had a gun, but he couldn't say who they were, where they were going to harm him or when, authorities said. He described Davis Sr.as an "outstanding officer" who was "loved by all here at the Village of Bellwood" and his wife as a "wonderful woman". Police released a photo of Davis and urged the public to call 911 if they saw him, but also warned that he shouldn't be confronted.

It's unclear whether a university staff member or officer was monitoring the entrance of the residence hall when the suspect came in with the weapon.

He brought it back to the room and allegedly shot his parents, police said.

Charges against Davis. Jr. were pending. More than 20,000 students are at the Mount Pleasant campus. Davis Jr. graduated from a high school in Plainfield, Illinois, about 30 miles southwest of Chicago, in 2016, said Tony Hernandez, Plainfield school district spokesman. Yeagley said. "The mother said she too is concerned this could be drugs".

The reaction to the shooting was swift Friday morning, with multiple alerts going out on social media and mobile phones within minutes of the incident.

"I think everyone - people who weren't here may be who didn't experience it might be a little shaken but I never really questioned the safety of this campus", said Kelsey Bogrow.
