Former Hollyoaks stars win an Oscar

Rachel Shenton took home Oscar gold when The Silent Child, which she wrote and starred in, won the Academy Award for best live action short film on Sunday night.

Rachel, who's perhaps best known for playing glamour girl Mitzeee Minniver in the British soap between 2010 and 2013, signed her speech after making a promise to the film's six-year-old lead actress Maisie Sly, who is profoundly deaf.

Midlands-based director Chris Overton and his screenwriter fiancee Rachel Shenton could hardly believe their Oscar triumph. "My hands are shaking so I apologize".

"Our movie is about a deaf child being born into a world of silence". He passed away in 2001, at which time Rachel learned sign language and even qualified as an interpreter.

Rachel Shenton might not look familiar to everyone, but for everyone who was part of the Switched at Birth family, you know her well.

As Shenton comments, deafness is an invisible and non-life-threatening disability; consequently, it is often overlooked, leaving many children isolated from the rest of the world.

Maisie didn't go up on stage to collect the award, but Overton told BBC 5 live: "When we won I could see her up there jumping up and down and that was surreal".

"@SilentChildFilm is an inspirational, attractive story, and we send all our love for her very worthy win".

Following their win, Rachel's former Hollyoaks co-star Jorgie Porter took to Twitter to congratulate them, writing: "I'm absolutely soooooo bloody estastic (sic)!"

"Deafness is a silent disability, I want to say the biggest of thank yous to the Academy for allowing us to put this in front of a mainstream audience".

CHRIS OVERTON: for helping us finish the film.

In his acceptance speech, Chris, from Heath Hayes, near Cannock, thanked his fiancée saying: "'It's really your hard work for the last 12 years that has really made this project authentic". We should continue doing that when the world tells us to make them deeper.
