What will National Football League protests mean for free agents?

What will National Football League protests mean for free agents?

The report comes on the heels of a second season of players protesting during the playing of the national anthem.

Last season, Texans' owner, Bob McNair made waves when he referred to players kneeling during the anthem as "inmates" running the prison and the backlash was evident.

Jerome Solomon of the Houston Chronicle spoke with two NFL agents who have been led to believe the Texans are not interested in any free agent players who have chosen to take part in national anthem protests.

"I just don't understand the Texans", Kaepernick's attorney Mark Geragos said.

"The Texans ownership, coaching, personnel and executive staff sign and hire employees based on talent, character and fit within our organisation".

The NFL Players Association said in a statement: "Our union is proud of all of our players whenever they express themselves for a bigger objective".

"We are glad that both the Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins have clarified their positions to be consistent with what was confirmed with our union leadership, and we expect all other National Football League teams to maintain the same commitment to protecting those rights". The protests have typically been described as a means of drawing attention to racial inequality and police brutality in the United States, though critics - including President Donald Trump - have ripped the demonstrations as unpatriotic and disrespectful to the military.

While money will always speak louder than anything else, it's hard to see why any free agent would willingly sign for a team that has an owner who once likened his players to criminals.
