Microsoft Confirms Windows 10 S Becomes '10S Mode' in 2019

Part of the appeal of Chrome OS and Windows 10 S mode is the ability to perform basic tasks required for work and education on a capable laptop or PC that is much less expensive than a traditional computer. It means that the operating system will no longer remain a dedicated version starting 2019, and will shift to its Windows 10 S Mode. Understandably, it's been a bit hard to determine how to classify what's essentially functioned as a forked version of the company's broader OS. In its place, Microsoft will build a new "S Mode" into Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Enterprise, and Windows 10 Pro.

While Microsoft will be abandoning Windows 10 S but, it will not abandon its Windows '10 S users as Microsoft will be giving free Win 10 Home upgrade to Windows 10 S Users. As with Windows 10 S, any consumers using a device with Windows 10 running in 10S mode will likely be able to unlock the full version for a price.

It's still unclear as to why this change is happening, though improving the ease of moving between Windows 10 S and regular Windows 10 isn't a bad idea.

Microsoft said the new privacy settings will roll out to customers with the next Windows 10 update this spring. Chrome OS and Chromebooks proved popular in the education market, both because of the comparatively low price and ease of use.

Microsoft Previews New Privacy Screen For Windows Insiders

The next major iteration of Windows 10 is due soon, either this month or early next, and based on all that we know so far, it's going to be worth the upgrade. The third benefit that Microsoft pointed out is rather obvious, and that's flexibility, since developers can now choose whether to process this data on the device, or in the cloud.

The mode will restrict Windows 10 to only run certain apps from the Microsoft store.

In a recent post on Twitter, Microsoft executive Joe Belfiore wrote that "We use Wind10S as an option for schools or businesses that want the "low-hassle"/guaranteed performance version..."
