Cop, Suspect Dead After Disturbing 911 Call

Bill Lowe said during a news conference that the Clinton County 911 center received a call Tuesday evening at 9:20 where two women could be heard screaming in the background. The officers reportedly confirmed with dispatch that they were in the correct location and proceeded to enter the home to further investigate the situation.

The Topeka Police Department tweeted Wednesday, "The unimaginable hurt in Clinton, MO PD and Community for their fallen Officer- OFC Morton- only 30 years old".

Multiple law enforcement agencies in northeast Kansas are expressing their condolences after a 30-year-old Missouri officer was shot and killed in the line of duty.

UPDATE 12:31 a.m.: The Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop A confirms the suspect involved in the officer involved shooting was located deceased inside of the residence. Officer Nicholas Kasper suffered gunshot wounds. He was released from the hospital early Wednesday.

Morton's friend, Aiza Evans, told The Star that Morton knew the dangers of police work but was very patriotic and "passionate in everything he did". "Rest in peace Officer Morton".

"I don't think so", he responds. After doing so the officers engaged with the suspect.

Police dispatcher: "Three-nineteen, what's your status?" "Stay with us, Morton". That's when the Missouri Highway Patrol arrived to help.

The shooter then barricaded himself in the home and was discovered dead by a SWAT team shortly after midnight.

It is not yet known if the suspect died as a result of the gun battle with police or if it was self-inflicted.

The women in the house at the time were not injured and were taken into custody. Tammy Widger is being held on $25,000 bond.

Shields said officers had been searching for Waters in connection with a rape case but that it wasn't clear how he was involved. He was honored for his military service at #TheK in 2014.

At some point in time in that interaction they [police officers] were shot at by the suspect from inside the residence.

"He was just four days, five days away from becoming a Clinton Elk, so, that's kind of hard to take", said Clinton Elks House Committee Chairman Steve Cummings.

Morton's death was seven months to the day after a fellow Clinton police officer, Gary Michael, was shot dead, ABC Kansas City affiliate KMBC-TV reported.
