Pentagon says 'no tanks' to Trump's request for Washington military parade

Less than a month after the Trump administration unveiled a fiscal 2019 budget that included $3 trillion in cuts, USA defense officials late Friday released plans for the parade which has been scheduled for November 11, Veteran's Day.

The parade will also include a "heavy air component, " the memo said, with military planes flying overhead at the end of the parade. It also said the parade will "include wheeled vehicles only, no tanks" and that "consideration must be given to minimize damage to local infrastructure".

Trump has discussed a parade to show off military strength since he paid a visit to Paris last July and observed the French Bastille Day parade.

A Pentagon planning memo issued Thursday and released Friday says the parade being planned for November 11, Veterans Day, will "include wheeled vehicles only, no tanks - consideration must be given to minimize damage to local infrastructure".

The route will be from the White House to the U.S. Capitol Building.

"We'll see if we can do it at a reasonable cost, and if we can't, we won't do it".

But the event will include plenty of airplane flyovers, according to a memo from the office of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, whose staff will be in charge of planning the parade.

The parade will focus on the contributions of American veterans throughout the history of the us military, starting with the Revolutionary War, and highlight the evolution of women veterans from World War II to the present, according to the memo.

CNN reports the Joint Staff will plan the parade and Northern Command will execute it.

The letter asked for the inclusion of the Medal of Honor Association, as well as Veterans Service Organizations, and to have veterans and Medal of Honor recipients standing around President Trump at the Capitol.

"But the generals would love to do it, I can tell you, and so would I", Trump told Fox News last month.

"We're all aware in this country of the President's affection and respect for the military", Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said February 7". And formations donning "period uniforms" may be utilized to "represent veterans from previous wars", the letter said.
