Nun at centre of Katy Perry legal battle dies in court

Nun at centre of Katy Perry legal battle dies in court

A Los Angeles nun involved in a lawsuit against Katy Perry over the sale of a hilltop convent passed away after collapsing during a court appearance.

Sister Catherine Rose Holzman, one of two ageing nuns who were fighting the sale of the three-hectare convent, died on Friday during related legal proceedings in Los Angeles County Court, Fox affiliate KTTV reported.

The singer wanted to buy the eight acre property for $14.5 million, but the group of nuns said they were uncomfortable with the deal.

The uproar over the property began in 2015 when Holzman and the sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary sold the Medieval-Spanish-Gothic-Tudor estate to restaurateur Dana Hollister. She collapsed and died shortly thereafter.

After the property's sale, the archdiocese intervened and called Hollister's offer a fraud claiming that the nuns did not have the authority to sell the property.

"We asked (Ms Hollister) to save us, to buy the property, ' Sister Catherine told Fox 11 LA just hours before her death. We extend our prayers today to the Immaculate Heart of Mary community and to all her friends and loved ones", he continued.

A judge ruled that the sale of the convent was invalid and Perry and the Catholic Church were awarded a total of nearly $10m (£7.2m) in damages in December previous year.

At the time, the Los Angeles Times reported that the singer had visited the nuns in an effort to ease their anxieties - discussing her tattoo of Jesus and singing them a hymn to demonstrate her respect for the religion.

The case had put Holzman and Callanan at odds with Los Angeles Archbishop José Gomez, who had publicly challenged the sisters in court.

"Rest with the angels our most precious treasure".

And they're also making a plea to Perry herself.

But last fall, a jury found Hollister guilty of malice and fraud for allegedly interfering with the sale of the property.

The latter had refused to leave, so Perry and her team called the police officers to the premises.
