The party has also nominated L Hanumanthaiah, Syed Naseer Hussain and G C Chandrasekhar from Karnataka, while Porika Balram Naik has been nominated to contest from Telangana. Tribal leader Sameer Uranv is a candidate from Jharkhand.

The Trinamool Congress has already announced its support for Singhvi's candidature.

Media management has been at the core of the Narendra Modi government's strategy ever since it came to power, and now, towards the end of its fourth year, it has rewarded two of its spokespersons with Rajya Sabha berths. Congress spokesperson Satyavrat Chaturvedi, who is among the five retiring members, could not make to the list.

The choice of Mr Soni and Singh would help the party in the state going to the polls with Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, party sources said.

Meanwhile, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) had fielded Manoj Jha and Ashfaque Karim as Rajya Sabha candidates. Discussions for an alliance for the Rajya Sabha were held at the highest level figuring Congress president Rahul Gandhi and JMM executive president Hemant Soren in Delhi. The polls will be held on March 23. Congress Jharkhand in-charge RPN Singh and state Congress chief Ajoy Kumar confirmed that the name of the candidate from Jharkhand will be announced soon.

The Congress has named Babu Prasad as the UDF opposition candidate from Kerala.

He formally introduced the three to the party MPs, MLAs and MLCs at a TRS Legislature Party meeting at Telangana Bhavan (the TRS headquarters) here on Sunday.

The TRS nominees won with the extended support from Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM).

Union Human Resource Development Minister and BJP leader Prakash Javadekar filed his nomination papers yesterday. So, the party opted to nominate Jaitley from Uttar Pradesh. It's a comfort for the BJP state leadership that they got a candidate from within the party itself. Based on its strength in the state assembly, the ruling BJP can send eight persons to the Upper House of Parliament, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the BSP can send one member each. It also chose Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar.
