Israeli government avoids early elections

The latest crisis revolves around supporting legislation exempting ultra-Orthodox youth from serving in the military and the passage of 2019 state budget.

Monday night, Netanyahu is meeting with Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, trying to work out a deal over conscripting the ultra-Orthodox.

Lieberman can climb down from his high ladder and support the new draft bill, which represents significant chareidi compromise.

The political crisis comes as Netanyahu is battling a series of corruption allegations.

Opposition politicians and a leading member of the prime minister's coalition have accused Netanyahu, who is polling strongly of seeking snap elections as a way to bolster his standing in the event of a criminal indictment.

After a truly intricate dance between a nor'easter of raindrops, the Netanyahu government coalition has managed to avoid a coalition collapse and the inevitable early elections that would result.

"The coalition parties challenged the prime minister and threatened to run against him".

Coalition chiefs on Tuesday evening hailed the compromise deal achieved at the last minute which seems to have solved a coalition crisis that had nearly dismantled the government, with Netanyahu taking credit for the agreement.

Lieberman vowed on Tuesday that his Yisrael Beitenu party would "vote as one against the bill" as it stands now. The court gave Parliament a year to pass a new law. "But we are not there", Netanyahu said. Though he has become a responsible cabinet member ("the most adult among them", we hear sometimes) and apparently not a bad minister of defense, the Russian base of his party is shrinking and one of the former members of his parliamentary faction has made a decision to form her own party thus competing with the man who once was her boss.

Military service for ultra-Orthodox men is one of the most fraught topics in Israel and looked to undermine Netanyahu's coalition government, which has 66 out of the 120 lawmakers.

Netanyahu's opponents have been calling on him to resign since police recommended February 13 that he be indicted on bribery and fraud charges in two influence-peddling cases; police are still investigating a third case in which several former close aides have agreed to testify against him.
