Mueller authorized to investigate Manafort for Russian Federation collusion

Van der Zwaan was charged with lying to investigators during a November 3 meeting about his contacts with a person identified as "Person A" and Richard Gates, a Trump campaign aide and close confidant of Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager.

He looked the judge in the eye and said, "What I did was wrong". Van der Zwaan lied to investigators on several occasions about his contacts with both Gates and Person A, prosecutors said. "I await your judgment".

Papadopoulos has pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his Russia-related contacts during the campaign, including his communications with a London-based professor who told Papadopoulos the Russians held thousands of emails that would be damaging to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

"This was lying during the course of a federal investigation", she added, noting that being able to "write a check and walk away" would not fit the seriousness of the crime or send the right message.

Manafort, 68, has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy, money laundering, and tax and bank fraud charges related to his lobbying work for a pro-Russian political party in Ukraine and former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych.

Van der Zwaan's apology and his lawyer's explanations for his client's actions appeared to ring hollow for the judge.

Van der Zwaan received a 30-day prison sentence as well as a $20,000 fine and two months probation.

Van der Zwaan, 33, is married to the daughter of prominent Russian billionaire German Khan, founder of the privately owned Alfa Bank.

Alex van der Zwaan raises his arms as he goes through security checkpoint during his arrival Federal District Court in Washington, Tuesday, April 3, 2018. After his lies were called out, van der Zwaan began co-operating with investigators, including sharing recordings of his conversations with Gates, Person A, and with a senior Skadden partner. Gates pleaded guilty and is cooperating with the probe, while Manafort faces a trial later this year.

The charges appear minor, but Mueller has always been insistent that van der Zwaan serve time in jail for his misstatement.

"He is literally in limbo", Mr Schwartz said.

"I assure you", she said, "that right now that while this might feel like the most momentous thing in your life, much of the story of your life, indeed the majority of the story of your life, has yet to be written". He has said he met with Kilimnik in person in May 2016 and again in New York City in August 2016, about two weeks before Manafort resigned as Trump's campaign chairman. But this sentencing has nothing to do with Trump, the 2016 election, or Russian Federation. Politico reports that his lawyers had asked the judge to let him return home to London by August, when his wife is due to give birth. Just last week, the government revealed that van der Zwaan and Gates spoke during the 2016 presidential campaign with a man Gates had previously described as having ties to the GRU, Russia's military intelligence agency.

Prosecutors have alleged that Manafort and Gates used an offshore account to secretly pay $4 million for the report.
