The Duke of Edinburgh will undergo planned surgery on his hip at King Edward VII Hospital on Wednesday.

Prince Philip was also forced to pull out of an event with the British Ministry of Defence at Windsor Castle in March.

Buckingham Palace said the surgery went well and that he is "progressing satisfactorily at this early stage" while staying in "good spirits", local news outlets reported.

"His Royal Highness is likely to remain in hospital for several days".

96-year-old Prince Philip is due to have a hip surgery today at a private hospital in London, Buckingham Palace has said. It is understood that the operation will require a general anaesthetic.

He has missed a number of family events, including Easter church service. However, he began to experience various health problems from the age of 87.

"What is most important is someone's fitness, as in their heart and lung fitness, how much exercise they do and how well nourished they are".

Philip announced his retirement from royal duties in May and curtailed most of his charity work although he still accompanies the Queen on occasion.

Prince William and his wife Kate are expecting their third child this month, and Prince Harry plans to marry American actress Meghan Markle on May 19 at Windsor Castle.

Philip has been in generally good health for his age, but he was briefly hospitalised over Christmas in 2011 for angioplasty treatment of a blockage in his coronary arteries.

The two were introduced in 1939 when then princess Elizabeth's father king George VI and his family toured the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, in England's south coast, where Philip was a cadet.
