Body Of CDC Scientist Missing Since February Found In Georgia River

The body of Timothy Cunningham, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention epidemiologist missing since February, has been found. Cunningham's remains were found this week in a river in Atlanta.

Unfortunately, Timothy's body was found near the Chattahoochee River late Tuesday night, according to WSB-TV Atlanta. But police said that, based on their own interviews and the findings of the autopsy so far, they have no reason to believe there was any foul play. In a statement, the CDC said Cunningham received an "exceptional proficiency promotion" July 1 to the position of commander, an early promotion reflecting his excellence as an employee.

Cunningham, 35, was last seen on February 12.

Fulton County Medical Examiner Jan Gorniak said the cause of death is "probably" drowning.

The CDC denied those reports and said Cunningham received an early promotion for his exemplary performance at work.

O'Connor has stressed that investigators have not uncovered any evidence that Cunningham's promotion snub was directly linked to his disappearance.

Pending an unusual break in the case, O'Connor said that the case may be listed as inactive soon - possibly in a month's time.

"At this stage, we're waiting on some information from the medical examiner's office or if someone were to bring new information to us that was relevant, then we would obviously look at that", O'Connor said.

Cunningham, a Harvard graduate, was wearing favorite jogging suit, officials said.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Cunningham was last seen leaving work after complaining to co-workers that he wasn't feeling well.

The New York Times reports his family said their last phone conversations with Cunningham had left them anxious and "he sounded not like himself".

"Tim's impact will be felt not only through his significant contributions to CDC's mission, but also through his influence on the lives of his colleagues and friends".

His CDC biography says he was a "team lead" with the Division of Population Health and had deployed for several public health emergencies "including Superstorm Sandy, Ebola, and Zika".

By outward appearances, Cunningham seemed to have a successful career.

There are still many unanswered questions surrounding Cunningham's disappearance and what led up to his death.

When they arrived at his house a few days later, Cunningham's parents said, they knew something was wrong because his Tibetan spaniel was unattended.
