Ancestry.com Test Reveals Woman's OB/GYN Might Be Her Biological Father

Gizmodo notes that, upon receipt of the results of the ancestry test, Ms Rowlette was baffled by the inclusion of Gerald Mortimer, but she didn't know who he was right off the bat.

She did not know her mother had undergone artificial insemination, nor did she - or her parents - know her mother's fertility doctor had allegedly used his own sperm to get her pregnant with Rowlette. It was only afterward that Rowlette learned how, in 1979, her parents sought fertility treatment from Mortimer. In the early '80s, Rowlette's parents, Howard Fowler and Sally Ashby, had been dealing with infertility issues and turned to Dr. Mortimer for consultation. Mortimer diagnosed Fowler with a low sperm count and Ashby with a tipped uterus, a condition in which the uterus tilts toward the spine, according to the lawsuit. They even chose the donor profile, a college student higher than 1.80, with brown hair and blue eyes, as the BBC broadcasts.

It quickly became clear to Kelli Rowlette that the doctor had used his own sperm to impregnante her mother when she went to see him alongside her husband in the 1980s. When Ms. Ashby investigated further and saw Dr. Mortimer's name, she was devastated.

But the lawsuit claims that when Mortimer performed the procedure in the summer of 1980, he used his own sperm.

"Dr Mortimer knew Kelli Rowlette was his biological daughter but did not disclose this". When a Washington state woman sent in a DNA sample to Ancestry.com in 2017, she had no idea what kind of familial and legal drama would come from it, according to a Washington Post report.

It is also alleged that he cried when the family announced their plans to move to Washington, some 3000 miles away.

Rowlette is suing Mortimer, his wife and the Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates of Idaho Falls over the incident.

The plaintiffs say that Dr. Mortimer knowingly committed the fraud that was revealed by the Ancestry.com DNA test. Requests to reach Mortimer and the Idaho clinic in question were not immediately returned.

She gave birth to Kelli in May 1981. Mortimer apparently thought it was okay to use himself as a donor without telling the couple what he did.

"Based on what we know from what's been reported, and the knowledge of how our system works, it's possible that both biological mother and father both took the test, and that the child did as well, however without further details we can not speculate on individual cases", Melissa Garrett, a spokeswoman for Ancestry.com, wrote in an email. Last October, Rowlette was "horrified" to discover her birth certificate was signed by Mortimer. He received a one-year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to two charges of obstruction of justice, the Chicago Tribune reported.
