Weightlifter Laurel Hubbard Withdraws From Commonwealth Games After Elbow Injury

Hubbard twisted her elbow while attempting a Commonwealth record snatch lift of 132 kg, but dropped the bar behind her in clear pain.

The crowd had been supportive of Hubbard, who passed all requirements to make it into the Games and compete in the women's competition.

When asked if she was anxious about what kind of reaction she'd get when she entered the competition, Hubbard said "It would be untrue to say that the thought never crossed my mind".

Hubbard's inclusion within the competitors turned the ladies's over-90kg class into some of the mentioned occasions within the lead as much as the Gold Coast Video games.

According to reports, Samoan coach Jerry Wallwork earlier took issue with Hubbard, saying she had an unfair advantage and adding: "A man is a man and a woman is a woman".

"The strength is still there also and I believe it's very unjust, and for all women it's unjust".

She was formally known as Gavin Hubbard until she began transitioning four years ago at the age of 35.

"Look, it would be untrue to say that the thought never crossed my mind", she said when asked if she was anxious about the crowds not applauding for her because she's trans.

Representing New Zealand, Hubbard had nailed 120kg in her first lift.

The wait for the first transgender champion goes on.

Hubbard allegedly made her changeover to be girl at the time of 35 and now she has fulfilled each criteria below Commonwealth Games policies to qualify for its ladies's over-90kg lifting celebration.

"At this stage we don't know the exact details of the injury - it seems likely that I have ruptured a ligament or... some fairly significant tissue damage, but until we have further scanning we won't know the details or extent of the injury", Hubbard said, New Zealand news site Stuff reported.

"But no indication today that they were anything other than fantastic", she said, "A real credit to Australian people and broader sporting community".

Samoa's Feagaiga Stowers won the gold medal, with Charisma Amoe-Tarrant of Nauru taking silver.

A Kiwi TV commentator described the second as a "dramatic twist" after Hubbard had appeared effectively on her solution to the gold medal. "The federation's position on this has been clear in terms of respecting the athlete's right to compete, the rules of the global weightlifting federation in terms of their eligibility conditions".

"It's obviously a hard time, but the one thing I'm happiest about is that I tried to reach for my best performance".
