Pep Guardiola And Liverpool Charged By UEFA Following Champions League Tie

According to the BBC Sport, UEFA have also charged Liverpool after fireworks were set off and objects thrown inside Etihad Stadium.

At the end of a week in which his Manchester City team suffered three defeats at the hands of English rivals, Pep Guardiola was in the unusual position of being on the defensive after they were eliminated from the Champions League by Liverpool.

Guardiola's alleged transgression didn't exactly impact the game.

However, a resurgent second-half performance saw the Anfield club mount a comeback against the runaway Premier League leaders on Tuesday evening, winning 2-1 on the night thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino - seeing the Reds through to the semi-finals with a 5-1 aggregate win.

The Merseysiders were always going to be under the pump for significant portions of this game as City looked to somehow get back into this tie but it wasn't to be for the blue side of Manchester as they crashed out of the competition.

"The boys found a solution".

"We can not compare what we've done in the Premier League when we are here", said Guardiola.

Liverpool trail City by 17 points in the Premier League, but have now beaten Guardiola's men in three of their four meetings this season. But I needed to remind the guys that we had 50 minutes to be in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

"We should enjoy the moment".

"This wonderful goal that we served them on a plate".

Liverpool were unhappy at Mateu Lahoz in what was to be the start of a controversial night for the Spaniard when Virgil van Dijk claimed he had been pushed by Raheem Sterling in the lead-up to the goal. This wonderful goal that we served them on a plate.

"The ball [for Sane] came from (James) Milner".

Guardiola faces the first charge for his protests to the decision to rule out Leroy Sane's effort for offside late in the first half - despite the ball having come to him off a Liverpool player - which led to him being banished from the touchline.

Yet it was Liverpool whose approach turned out to be ideal in the circumstances as it followed up some staunch first-half defending to level through Salah in the 56th minute and seal the tie through Firmino 13 minutes from fulltime, clinching its third win against City this season.

With the cause looking lost for the hosts, Firmino robbed Otamendi on the edge of the area and stroked a low finish past Ederson to send the travelling fans into delirium and seal a miserable 10 days for City.
