Hurricane names Harvey, Irma, Maria and Nate retired -- goodbye!

They'll be replaced by Harold, Idalia, Margot and Nigel. (In other words, they are now using non-retired names that were also used in both 2012 and 2006.) They've been using this system since 1953.

Maria was used three times in the Atlantic and three times in the Western Pacific, while Nate was also used three times.

Eighty-six names have been retired from the Atlantic basin since 1954, when forecasters first began naming storms. The new names will make their debut during the 2023 hurricane season. They trail only Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005.

The names Harvey, Irma, Maria, and Nate have all been retired due to the extensive destruction these hurricanes caused a year ago.

Hurricane Irma will never impact Jacksonville again. At least 68 people were killed in Texas due to the storm.

Hurricane Irma reached category 5 intensity on September 5 and made seven total landfalls, four across the northern Caribbean Islands. Hundreds more were injured preparing for the storm, during it or in its aftermath.

Maria was still a category 4 hurricane when it reached Puerto Rico as the strongest storm to hit the island since 1928 and by far the most destructive. Maria caused 31 direct deaths with 34 missing in Dominica, and two direct deaths in Guadeloupe.

The deadly 2005 season was the highest year on record with five retired names. In Puerto Rico, the death toll stands at 65, plus an unknown number of indirect deaths.

Hurricanes season runs from June 1 to November 30.

Hurricane Nate killed 45 people in Central America. Join us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and our other social media channels.
