KY Governor claims "child was sexually assaulted" because of teacher protests

KY Governor claims

To override Bevin's vetoes, lawmakers must gain 51 votes in the House and 20 votes in the Senate. The budget override then passed the Senate with a 26-12 vote.

Bevin said he has put more money into teachers' pensions during three years in office than former Gov. Steve Beshear did in eight. It would apply Kentucky's 6 percent sales tax to 17 services, including auto fix and small animal veterinarian care, and it would increase the state's cigarette tax from 60 cents a pack to $1.10. Republican legislative leaders disagreed. They were also calling on Kentucky lawmakers to override the governor's veto of a $22 billion budget bill that contained significant education funding.

The governor bemoaned the teacher protest, telling a group of reporters outside the Capitol that school closures left some children unprotected.

"I'm not going to comment on something I'm just hearing about", he said. The rally took on a festival-like atmosphere as some teachers sat in lawn chairs or sprawled out on blankets.

"I don't want to be out of my classroom". President of the Kentucky Education Association Stephanie Winkler wrote on Twitter. A day earlier, he vetoed the proposed state budget and a bill to generate new revenue.

A survey done in 2011 and summarized in 2013 found that two percent of 5-year-olds and 6-year-olds who lived with their mother were left alone some of the time they weren't in school; that proportion increased to almost 30 percent of 14-year-olds.

"You can stand here all day and act like you are all for (education) until it comes time to pay for it".

"With that reasoning we would never have any vacation or breaks in school, and who knows what would happen in the summer", he said.

Six Republicans voted with Democrats to approve the veto. "What this tax bill really does, it raises 436 million dollars in taxes from the people who can least afford to pay for it", argued Jones.

In the interview, Bevin said, "This is what's insane to me".

"The only reason we did not have a special session a year ago is because Jeff Hoover, a married man, was sexually involved with a very young, single member of his staff and was paying hush money to hide his actions..."

While the Kentucky teachers have not demanded pay raises, the protests were inspired by the statewide strikes in West Virginia last month that pushed the legislature to give a five percent salary increase.

Ahead of lawmakers' return to Frankfort on Friday, more than two dozen school districts across the state have already canceled classes in response to a surge of teachers requesting time off.

Thousands of Oklahoma teachers gathered at the state Capitol again, but crowds were noticeably smaller Friday. But the Oklahoma Education Association wanted teachers' raises to be $10,000 on average. They are instead focused on a battle over their pensions. "We knew it was going to get worse before it gets better".

However, the final version of pension reform in this session is much better that Bevin's initial proposal that included major cuts in benefits for retired, current and future public employees.

ALERT: @JCPSKY schools will be closed Friday, April 13, 2018 due to more than 2,500 teacher absences.

In Fayette County, public schools Superintendent Manny Caulk invited everyone to go with him to Kentucky's Capitol Friday to fight for issues important to Lexington schools. Photo provided by courtesy of P. Forbes, social science teacher at Williamstown Sr. But not rejecting the vetoes means the state government won't have money to operate for the next two years. "In November, we plan to get as many new elected as we can", said Holbrook. Opponents worry this will discourage young people from becoming teachers.
