President Trump declared "mission accomplished" Saturday after US military forces carried out missile strikes with Britain and France against Syrian chemical-weapons facilities.

Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, the Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon, says the USA -led airstrikes against Syria has been "a very serious blow".

The US and its allies fired more than 100 cruise missiles at Syria, a significant number of which were intercepted by Syrian air defences, the Russian defence ministry said on Saturday.

Last year, in response to a chemical weapons attack against civilians and to signal the regime to cease chemical weapons use, we targeted the military base from which the weapons were delivered.

Canadian President Justin Trudeau said the country supports the decision "to take action to degrade the Assad regime's ability to launch chemical weapons attacks against its own people".

As pictures of the bombing raids aftermath continue to emerge, Mr Trump said he "could not have had a better result".

The political phrase "mission accomplished", also holds some relevance in American military history.

In his statement, President Trump also reprimanded Russian Federation and Iran for supporting Syria in using chemical weapons against its citizens.

The gas attack, as claimed by him killed at least 40 people.

"Today's action by the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and France is a proper response to the repeated use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime".

"The barbaric aggression ...will not affect in any way the determination and insistence of the Syrian people and their heroic armed forces", state media quoted an official ministry source as saying. The air strikes "lit up the night skies" over Syria's capital Damascus and the town of Homs, as they targeted three suspected chemical weapons sites - a research centre, a storage facility, an equipment facility and command post.

Russian Federation is one of Assad's strongest allies and has military bases in Syria.

She also added that she would return to the Commons on Monday following the Easter recess to give a statement and answer questions about the attack.

Syria has denied using chemical weapons.

The Syrian foreign ministry said the US-led strikes would only "lead to inflaming tensions in the world" and threaten worldwide security. Moscow also said it was calling an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, where it is a permanent member, to discuss the "aggressive actions" of the USA and its allies.

Russia's ambassador to the U.S. responded by saying the attack on its ally "will not be left without consequences".
