Beyoncé's Historic Coachella Performance Culminates In A New Scholarship Program

Beyoncé paid tribute to historically black colleges during her groundbreaking Coachella performance, and now the singer is donating $100,000 to four black universities.

Beyonce returned spectacularly to the stage Saturday with a joyous, homecoming-themed party at the Coachella festival where she delighted fans with a rare reunion of her former trio Destiny's Child.

The more than 100 historically black US colleges and universities were all created before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 when white people dominated institutions of higher education could bar African American students from enrolling for higher studies.

Beyonce not only performed at Coachella for two hours, but she also conquered a near wardrobe malfunction.

Since Beyonce is not supposed to wear something that will be sold in stores, Rousteing worked with Senofonte and the entire style team of the singer to come up with two custom stage wardrobes from Balmain that she will use for her April 14 and April 21 performances.

The scholarships, under the newly established Homecoming Scholars Award Program, is open to all applicants in the selected schools regardless of gender, provided they maintain a GPA of 3.5 or above. The energy-filled production put the spotlight on art and culture, mixing the ancient and the modern, which resonated masterfully through the marching band, performance art, choir and dance. Each university will select its own finalists, with the winners set to be announced this summer. Visit beyonce.com for more info.

One student from each school- Xavier, Wilberforce, Tuskegee and Bethune-Cookman- will each receive a $25, 000 grant for the 2018-2019 school year.

In 2017 Beyoncé announced her Formation Scholars Awards Program, timed to the release of her album Lemonade, which was awarded to "young women who are bold, creative, conscious, confident and unafraid to think outside of the box".
