VAR calls players back from dressing room for penalty

VAR calls players back from dressing room for penalty

Shortly before the half-time whistle, referee Guido Winkmann waved away a penalty shout from the Mainz players after Freiburg defender Marc-Oliver Kempf looked to have handled in his own box.

Mainz were rewarded with a penalty when the players had already left the pitch for half-time.

Freiburg coach Christian Streich, who was recently sent off for dissent in a league match, was on the sideline smiling and shaking his head in disbelief, after being told to get his players back out.

Mainz eventually went on to win 2-0 thanks to a another, non-VAR-assisted goal from De Blasis.

Speaking to Eurosport at half-time, Jochen Saier said: "It leaves a bitter taste".

"We were under the impression that when the referee blows for half-time that's it".

Mainz climbed to 15th on goal difference above Freiburg who fell to 16th, the relegation playoff spot.

Kleindienst, on as a half-time substitute, almost equalised with a header at the right end moments later but the visitors were made to pay in the 78th minute.

It's been a mess so far with incorrect decisions even after VAR consultation and delays of play lasting up to ten minutes. Instead, it was made regarding the scheduling of Bundesliga games on Monday nights.

English football has had its fair share of problems and controversies with the infamous VAR system this season, but nothing comes close to the extraordinary scenes that occurred over in Germany in the Bundesliga clash between Mainz and Freiburg on Monday night.

With concerns remaining, the Premier League have opted not to adopt the technology for next season, however it will be used at this summer's World Cup in Russian Federation.
