OPCW says experts will only deploy to Douma if given 'unhindered access'

An inspection by Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) inspectors was delayed after United Nations security personnel "encountered a security issue" involving protesters and gunfire, Reuters reported, citing sources with knowledge of revelations made by OPCW director-general Ahmet Üzümcü Wednesday at the organization's headquarters in The Hague.

The OPCW fact-finding mission to Douma has been delayed from entering the town after a United Nations security team came under "small arms fire".

The accounts contradict what the Syrian government and Russian Federation have reported: that there was no gas attack in Douma.

The U.N. source did not say when the inspectors might visit the site, or whether a planned visit to Douma on Wednesday had been postponed.

"At site two, the team came under small arms fire and an explosive was detonated". Members of the security team were not injured and returned to Damascus after the incident.

Russian Federation and Syria cited "pending security issues" as their reason for turning the inspectors away, said Ahmet Üzümcü, the director general of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). "We have not denied the team any request for it to go to Douma". "Of course, I shall only consider such deployment following approval by the UNDSS, and provided that our team can have unhindered access to the sites".

The suspected April 7 gas attack on Douma, near Damascus, reportedly left more than 40 people dead and was blamed by Western powers on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

Worldwide inspectors from the global chemical weapons watchdog entered the Syrian city of Douma on Tuesday, where a suspected chemical attack killed at least 40 people earlier this month, even as the USA and France voiced fears that the site may have been tampered with.

A United Nations official says a U.N. team on a security mission to the site of a suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria was sacked upon and had to return to its base in Damascus.

Nebenzia said the Western allies should also end "hateful rhetoric" against Syria and Russian Federation, separate military groups "from terrorists once and for all", and provide humanitarian assistance to Syria.

France says it is "highly likely" evidence was disappearing from Douma before weapons experts arrived in the area.

Military strikes hit three targets: a warfare technology center and two chemical weapons facilities.

"Cleaning up a site after a chemical attack to the point where no traces of the agent or of characteristic degradation products can be found is hard, in particular when the impact site was a building".

Russian Federation claimed that it was "staged".

The Syrian army began preparatory shelling on Tuesday for an assault on the last area outside its control near Damascus, a commander in the pro-government alliance said.

Hay said the weapon looked to be composed of an irritant like chlorine mixed with a nerve agent: "It certainly looks like some chemical attack from the social media footage I have seen".

As for my opinion concerning the strike itself, nobody can deny that France, the United Kingdom and the US are colonizing countries that make decisions, and take action based exclusively on their own interests. If possible, gathering samples from deceased victims will be "very valuable" since the substances could still be in their blood and organs.

It is the objective of the OPCW investigators to determine the truth. As they spoke, government troops were nearby but out of earshot.

OPCW Director-General Ahmet Uzumcu said Syrian and Russian officials cited "pending security issues" in keeping its inspectors from reaching Douma.
