Raul Castro To Step Down As Cuba's President

Raul Castro To Step Down As Cuba's President

Cuban allies in Latin America have been voted out of government positions across the region in recent years.

CBS News correspondent Manuel Bojorquez reports from Havana that many on the island do not necessarily foresee any drastic changes, and there are some in the younger generation that were hopeful of some expansion of limited economic reforms and more opportunities.

The rubber-stamp assembly will vote on another 30 other members of Cuba's state council along with the replacement for Castro.

The next president is likely to be cautious at first, seeking to consolidate support among conservatives despite a desire for faster development of an economy smaller than it was in 1985, when Cuba had the support of the Soviet Union.

Miguel Diaz-Canel, a 57-year-old Communist Party official and the country's current first vice-president, is due to be confirmed on Thursday as the successor to Mr Castro, whose departure will end his family's six-decade grip on power.

President Raul Castro, 86, is expected to step down after two five-year terms during the assembly, marking the completion of Castro rule on the socialist nation. "Diaz-Canel needs to work hard on the economy, because people need to live a little better". "That's it. No more dictators in Cuba", said one protester.

Most Cubans know their first vice president as an unremarkable speaker who initially assumed a public profile so low it was virtually nonexistent.

That dexterity will be crucial if Diaz-Canel wants to push through changes along the sort of careful trajectory Castro has set enough to make Cuban socialism sustainable but not so much they destroy the system.

The nomination must be approved by the Cuban National Assembly, which has historically approved nominations.

Raul Castro looks up during an event in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the assault of the presidential palace during the regime of Fulgencio Batista, in Havana, Cuba, March 13, 2007.

"Most Cubans, especially the young, await an unambiguous, decisive acceleration of market-opening reforms", Feinberg said. Only one, 85-year-old Ramiro Valdez, was among the revolutionaries who fought with the Castros in the late 1950s in the eastern Sierra Maestra mountains.

That media went into overdrive Wednesday with a single message: Cuba's system is continuing in the face of change. Few Cubans use Twitter and the vast majority of the country relies on TV for news.

However, according to various media reports and expert estimations, Raul Castro could remain the leader of Cuba's Communist Party - the country's sole official political party - at least until 2021.

As in Cuba's legislative elections, all of the leaders being voted in on Wednesday are selected by a government-appointed commission. The National Assembly was due to vote later in the day on the proposal to replace him with Diaz-Canel, a 57-year-old engineer who is now first vice president. The State Council's makeup and the name of the new head of state will be announced on Thursday.
