Britain's Prince Charles to succeed Queen as Commonwealth head

Britain's Prince Charles to succeed Queen as Commonwealth head

After years of treating the question as too distasteful to discuss, dealing with a world after the Queen's death, leaders at the London meeting finalised plans during a private retreat at Windsor Castle on Friday afternoon.

During the formal opening ceremony on Thursday, April 19, at Buckingham Palace, the Queen, in her keynote address hinted that Prince Charles should succeed her as head of the 53-member organisation.

The birthday comes amid ongoing media speculation over whether the Queen will transition the throne to her heir, Prince Charles, as regent.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had said during a roundtable meeting with fellow leaders that Commonwealth countries should make the most of the network, which has functioned as a trade bloc.

Prince Charles' approval has yet to be officially confirmed by the Commonwealth.

The final decision stopped short of that approach, however, and named Prince Charles as the next head without saying this would be the model adopted in the future.

Rwanda joined the bloc in 2009 becoming the second member to be admitted into the Commonwealth club of nations without any direct colonial ties to British, after Mozambique. And other world leaders, like Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, also gave their seal of approval.

The Queen said she was happy to welcome leaders into her home in the first CHOGM held in London since 1997.

"And after all it was brilliantly cued by the Prime Minister of Malta, who implied that the discussion was in hand, and then the Queen spoke". Queen Elizabeth II, the Head of the Commonwealth opened the Commonwealth summit for what may be the last time today.

On Friday the 69-year-old heir to the British throne got another position to wait for - he was approved as the next head of the Commonwealth made up of the United Kingdom and the countries that once were its colonies.

The Commonwealth is a community of 53 countries - mostly former British colonies - with a combined population of about 2.4 billion.

Prince Harry was appointed as the Commonwealth Youth Ambassador by the Queen earlier his week.
