Chelsea's Alonso banned for three games

The 27-year-old Alonso was Chelsea's only representative in the Professional Footballers' Association Premier League team of the year that was announced Wednesday.

Marcos Alonso is set to miss Chelsea's next three games due to being suspended by the FA for his stamp on Southampton's Shane Long.

Saints boss Mark Hughes described Alonso's challenge as "poor" and was frustrated that referee Mike Dean and his assistants failed to see it.

The Spaniard denied the charge and said such a suspension would be excessive.

Alonso's challenge in the 43rd minute was not seen by the match officials but was caught by Sky Sports' television cameras, and the FA have chose to act retrospectively after the incident was reviewed by a panel of former elite officials.

The Blues have struggled this season, but Alonso has been a stand-out performer with the Spain worldwide being named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

Alonso will miss Chelsea's trip to Burnley in their Premier League rescheduled game, the FA Cup semi-final against the same opponents on Sunday at Wembley and Swansea on April 28.

The January signing from Roma will nearly certain play a part in the league visits against Burnley and Swansea along with Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Southampton.

Chelsea were sent out of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League by Barcelona who defeated the Blues 3-0 in the second leg of their knock out stage, and Messi was impressed with Alonso's game.
