Weekend box office: Avengers: Infinity War keeps going strong

Weekend box office: Avengers: Infinity War keeps going strong

The previous record of fastest time for a movie to make a $1 billion was 12 days for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens".

Infinity War has received generally positive reviews from critics, and moviegoers gave it an A CinemaScore. That film, of course, had the benefit of the Christmas holiday, which helped push it towards a record breaking $149.2 million second weekend.

Newcomer "Overboard" takes second place on this weekend's chart.

Internationally, Infinity War amassed another $162.6 million, thanks in part to a record breaking $17.6 million opening in Russian Federation, bringing the film's worldwide total to $713.3 million - with China still to come later this month.

Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Chadwick Boseman and Tom Holland also features in Avengers: Infinity War.

There was little new competition this weekend, but a few alternative options including the "Overboard" remake, which scored the highest-grossing opening weekend for Pantelion Films with $14.8 million from 1,623 theaters.

Internationally, Avengers: Infinity War added $162.6 million this weekend and has earned a total of $713.3 million, with China still to go on May 11. The film should have an easy path to the number two spot at the weekend box office, but it probably won't have a prayer of beating out AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.

In sixth place, "Tully", starring Charlize Theron, launched on 1,353 screens with $3.2 million. Check back on Tuesday for next weekend's predictions, but until then, take a look at the top 10 estimates for the weekend of May 4, courtesy of Box Office Mojo.

Avengers: Infinity War, which released on April 27, went past the United States dollars one billion mark on Saturday, reports Variety.
