Road signs pointing to 'US Embassy' go up in Jerusalem

The first U.S. Embassy road signs went up in Jerusalem on Monday.

At the consulate site, mechanical diggers cleared scrubland as workers posted embassy signs along city roads and hung US, Israeli and Jerusalem flags from street lights.

President Donald Trump will apparently not travel to Israel for the controversial opening of the U.S. Embassy in Yerushalayim, according to a White House statement released on Monday.

Around 800 visitors, mostly from the United States and Israel, are expected to attend the cutting of the red-tape next week.

Trump sparked worldwide outcry when he unilaterally recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and vowed to relocate Washington's embassy to the city.

Arab foreign ministers of Arab League member states had also called for global recognition of Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The move prompted worldwide condemnation and triggered a wave of protests in the occupied Palestinian territories.

"The authorities in Jerusalem may have thought that the glitz of Giro d'Italia might have a "sportswash" effect, removing some of the stain of Israel's human rights record".

The president, who has charged Kushner with brokering a peace deal, said he has "taken Jerusalem, the toughest part of the negotiation, off the table".

In March, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said that his country would relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on May 16, two days after the US move. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has been making inroads with the European Union and Russian Federation. "Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish people - and the world is beginning to recognize this fact". The Palestinians, however, see East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

The worldwide community, the Arab League and other groups urged the USA president to reconsider.

The status of Jerusalem is among the most contentious in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in wake of Trump's announcement that the USA had effectively disqualified itself from peace process.

Trump had left the door open to personally attending the embassy opening.

The embassy is to get a festive inauguration on Monday next week, to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the state of Israel.
