St. Charles North came in at no. 18 and and St. Charles East at no. 23, according to the national magazine's annual list, released Wednesday.

The top ranking high school in the state is Central Magnet School in Murfreesboro.

The school at 880 Bissell Ave. earned a gold medal from U.S. News, which evaluated data from almost 29,000 public schools nationally. "Congratulations and thank you for your hard work!"

The report recognized 72 Colorado schools as among the best high school schools, including 11 gold medal schools, 31 silver medal school and 30 bronze medal schools.

"The first three steps ensured that the schools serve all of their students well, using their performance on the math and reading parts of their state proficiency tests and their graduation rates as the benchmarks", according to the methodology explained on the publication's website.

About a third of Bemidji High Schoolers take an AP test, Principal Brian Stefanich said, and 74 percent of them earned a 3, 4, or 5 on it.

High Schools in San Diego Unified, San Dieguito, Poway, Sweetwater and Chula Vista School Districts ranked among the top 1,000 in the country. The APĀ® participation rate at Ridgefield High School is 70 percent. Gautier's 90 percent graduation rate topped Ocean Springs' 87 percent, but Gautier only received a 13.4 CRI.

The 2018 rankings are based on data from the 2015-16 school year.

"The data shows that when high schools utilize these courses student achievement follows".

PMSA's student body is 47 percent low-income, 94 percent minority, 39 percent male and 61 percent female.

"Where we are in the rankings is never the focus", he said. Of those, schools were ranked based both on student performance, and on how the schools meet the needs of students who are not college-bound.
