Iran and Israel are shooting at each other in Syria. Why?

Israel, which has vowed to prevent any entrenched Iranian military presence in southern Syria, is suspected of carrying out several rounds of strikes against Tehran-backed forces.

Retired American four-star general and chairman of the Institute for the Studay of War Jack Keane was talking to Fox News about the febrile situation in the Middle East, as tensions ramp up following the USA's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.

"Six Syrian soldiers and 21 foreign fighters, including 11 Iranians" were among the dead, said the group's director, Rami Abdel Rahman. In February, Israel shot down an Iranian drone that entered its airspace, triggering a clash in which an Israeli warplane crashed after being struck by Syrian anti-aircraft fire.

The Israel Defense Forces said it was the most large-scale Israeli attack in Syria in decades.

On Friday, France urged Europeans to stand up to Trump over the nuclear deal and not act as "vassals", as the EU scrambles to find ways to save the accord and the billions of dollars in trade it unleashed.

Putin is giving Israel a free hand against Iran in Syria.

In a lengthy statement Friday, the Iranian government warned that it would take "whatever reciprocal measures it deems expedient" if it is not fully compensated for the US withdrawal from the nuclear agreement as provided for in the accord.

During the rule of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, Iran had close relations with Israel starting in the 1950s, including diplomatic representations and direct flights.

But the 1979 Islamic Revolution ousting the shah ended that.

At the same time, the government said it has tasked the president of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran with "taking all necessary steps in preparation for Iran to pursue industrial-scale enrichment without any restrictions".

Israel blamed the Quds forces, a special detachment of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, for being behind the missiles.

Is the Mideast sliding to an all-encompassing, ruinous war?

.

Iran plans to strike Israel from positions in Syria and Lebanon, a defence analyst has warned, as hostilities between the two countries threaten to spark World War 3.

But if they do escalate, the region could face one of its worst cross-border conflicts in decades, one that could potentially drag in the United States, a major ally of Israel, and Russian Federation, which is Syria's mightiest ally.

With the capture of the three suburbs, the only area outside government control in Damascus is that of the neighborhood of Hajar al-Aswad and the nearby Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk that are partially controlled by the Islamic State group.

In Yemen, the war in its fourth year is seen as a proxy between Saudi Arabia and Iran and can be a place for Tehran to retaliate and increase pressure.
