'Avengers: Infinity War' Stays Strong With $61 Million Third Weekend

Meanwhile, "Avengers: Infinity War" dominated the North American box office for a third straight weekend, raking in $61.8 million as it easily fended off competition, industry estimates showed. That figure was especially impressive considering the film hadn't even opened in China yet. That total puts Avengers: Infinity War in the worldwide top 5 films of all time. It is now the 11th highest-grossing import film of all-time and will soon dethrone Ready Player One, Jurassic World and Age of Ultron in the next few days.

Despite its huge opening, Infinity War still didn't beat out The Fate of the Furious for No.1 opening weekend in China.

The Disney blockbuster, featuring a string of Marvel superheroes out to save the universe from powerful purple alien Thanos (Josh Brolin), has had a cumulative take over three weeks of $547.8 million, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

Still showing legs at the box office is Marvel Studios' Black Panther, which grossed $1.9 million domestic in its 13 weekend in release.

China's opening helped it make $281.3 million internationally just over the weekend. Its direct sequel, the still-officially-untitled Avengers 4, is due out in theaters May 3, 2019. To celebrate, Marvel Studios has dropped the prices on many of its superhero movies to $10 on digital platforms, including Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu. It might be a tight race, but I believe Infinity War will pull ahead by the end of it's theatrical run to become the third highest grossing film of all time.

In the "lives" category, we have Howard the Duck (Seth Green), Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), and Nakia - though regarding Lupita Nyong'o's character, the Russos said that she is "deep undercover", which is why she wasn't in Infinity War, but wouldn't comment specifically on her status post-dusting.

As for cracking the top two, I don't envision Infinity War pulling it off.
