Turkey expels Israel ambassador amid global outrage over Gaza killings

Boyd Barrett also called for the immediate expulsion of the Israeli ambassador to Ireland, a call that was taken up by other speakers at the event and the crowd. "I suggest that he not preach morality to us".

Netanyahu blamed Hamas for the Gaza violence.

On BBC Radio Four's Today programme, Israel's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Mark Regev said that following the USA decision, there are Latin American and European countries that will also be moving their embassies to Jerusalem.

"We believe the realistic outcome of that would be and should be that Jerusalem being the capital both of the state Israel and the State of Palestine", she said.

The Gaza health ministry, which provided the toll from Monday's violence, said a nine-month-old girl died from tear gas exposure, but medical officials later cast doubt on that claim, saying the infant had a pre-existing medical condition.

The protest kicked off with a rally near Grant Park, on Michigan Avenue near Congress, with participants chanting "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!" and "Hey Netanyahu, what do you say?"

The United States on Tuesday stood apart from the worldwide community on the deadly situation in Gaza and again justified the relocation of its embassy to Jerusalem in the face of widespread concern expressed across the world.

At the United Nations general assembly in December 2017, nine countries, including the USA and Israel, voted against a resolution that, in effect, called on the U.S. to withdraw its recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The ongoing protests in Gaza are part of the "March of Return", which first began on March 30 with the aim of condemning Israel's occupation and demanding their right to return.

Jerusalem's status is perhaps the thorniest issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Hamas took control of Gaza in 2006 following elections that ultimately split the Palestinian territories politically and ideologically, with the left-wing Fatah retaining its authority in the West Bank. Other countries have taken or signalled diplomatic action: Turkey expelled Israel's ambassador, Ireland and Belgium summoned Israeli envoys, and the United Nations human rights office called for an investigation into the bloodshed. "These demonstrations are nothing new", Nauert said.

South African ambassador Sisa Ngombane was recalled after International Relations and Cooperation Minister Lindiwe Sisulu made contact with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo about possibly delaying America's move.

Israel said it is defending its border and accuses Hamas of trying to carry out attacks under the cover of the protests.

US Ambassador Nikki Haley defended Israel, however.

Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, defended Israel's response to Monday's violent protests on Tuesday, which erupted following the opening of the newly moved United States Embassy in Jerusalem.
