Solo: A Star Wars Story review round-up: 'It's pure fan service'

The review adds: "Solo: A Star Wars Story moreover has a glorious origin myth meet-cute to set up one of cinema's greatest bromances: the stoic wookiee Chewbacca and the insolently handsome freebooting rebel pilot Han Solo - and Alden Ehrenreich absolutely crushes the role to powder, swaggeringly reviving the memory of the young Harrison Ford's romantic gallantry". And if Han has forgotten all about them by the time he hooks up with Luke and Leia, then why should we try to remember them?

"I think that the clip that you see, even though it's really brief, tells you a lot", she teased of her brief appearance in the trailer for the upcoming prequel film.

They'll soon meet up with the man Beckett is working for, Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany), and encounter Han's old friend from Corellia, Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) before taking off on a risky smuggling mission.

The critics have spoken, and director Ron Howard's Solo: A Star Wars Story has been given the seal of approval on review site Rotten Tomatoes. "Also figuring into the lively character mix is Paul Bettany's power-hungry sociopath, Dryden Vos, and the criminally too-briefly-seen L3-37 (a hilarious Phoebe-Waller Bridge), a self-made droid who has an emotionally complicated relationship with Calrissian".

In fact, Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers says Ehrenreich "has the acting chops" to pull off his Solo impersonation. Even a Star Wars version of poker plays a significant role. But while Ehrenreich's Solo proves adept at maneuvering the Millennium Falcon out of some tight spots, the picture itself follows a safely predictable course. Unfortunately, much of the rest of the cast makes less of an impression. The character gets capes, boots, and a nice style of costumes. Harrelson does a great job and Glover is a standout amongst a truly talented group.

Collider Solo is technically a Star Wars movie, but it's one that has set pieces in place of a personality.

It's also episodic. To be generous, you could say that the choppy structure is true to the roots of Star Wars as an homage to such cliff-hanging Saturday matinees as Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon. He's a thief and smuggler that takes Han Solo under his wing.

Finally, for the ten-second answer to your question of whether you should watch the film, head over to The Guardian which writes, "Solo: A Star Wars Story reshuffles the accepted component myth-parts in a way that some find over familiar: there are desert scenes, weirdo cabaret acts". The Westworld star - who is the first black actress to appear in a starring role in the epic franchise - donned a custom Vivienne Westwood gown decorated with the black male stars of previous Star Wars films.
