Korea talks will take place

Trump did not say, however, whether the preparatory talks between U.S. and North Korean officials in coming days were expected to clarify the situation.

Mr Trump said at a meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Tuesday that the North must meet conditions for the summit to go ahead, and that "denuclearisation must take place".

Trump is due to meet the North Korean dictator on June 12 in the Southeast Asian city-state.

White House aides are preparing to travel to Singapore this weekend for a crucial meeting with North Korean officials to discuss the agenda and logistics for the summit, U.S. officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Shah noted that an advance team goes out ahead of all scheduled presidential teams.

It follows a historic meeting between the leaders of the Koreas in April.

Yoon Young-chan, senior secretary for public relations, said Moon assured Trump of North Korea's honest intentions, Seoul Economic Daily reported Wednesday.

Pompeo's reformulation of the USA demands was presaged by Trump on Tuesday, when a reporter asked if Kim could be expected to give up his nuclear capabilities all at once.

North Korea took particular offence at comments by Trump's hawkish national security adviser John Bolton that the USA was looking to the example of Libya, which relinquished its nuclear program in the early 2000s in exchange for sanctions relief.

That was a reference to Libya's former leader, Muammar Gaddafi, who agreed to give up nuclear weapons in 2003 and was later killed by Western-backed rebels.

North Korea conducted several nuclear tests over the past few years and developed long-distance missiles which, it says, can carry nuclear bombs as far as the U.S. mainland. "It is indeed not our model".

The South Korean government official also said it is necessary to discuss realizable and concrete measures toward denuclearization alongside regime security guarantees.

China's visiting foreign minister said his country supports the summit being held at its now scheduled time and venue and sees no reason for a delay. "If you want to solve the problem, now is the time".

Trump hedged on the issue Tuesday.

"When we get there, in exchange for that, we're prepared to do a great deal to help the North Korean people".

To date, North Korea has taken few concrete steps beyond halting the nuclear and missile tests that ratcheted up tensions previous year.

"The kid has been trying to make a deal with America for three years". Pompeo said denuclearization would cover nuclear weapons, missiles, engines and systems related to space launch rockets, production of fissile material and associated technology and research.

However, based on his own discussions with the North Korean leader, Pompeo said he was hopeful that Trump could convince Kim to make a strategic decision to denuclearise.

Earlier Wednesday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told lawmakers the talks were "still scheduled for June 12".

The North's decision to close the Punggye-ri nuclear test site has generally been seen as a welcome gesture by Kim to set a positive tone ahead of the summit.
