Reportedly Killed Russian Journalist Appears At News Conference In Ukraine

Upon saying this, he invited Babchenko into the hall to address the reporters. Russian authorities again denied any connection with the plane's downing over an area of Ukraine held by pro-Russian separatist forces.

Anton Gerashchenko, a Ukrainian lawmaker who serves as an adviser to the interior minister, said on Facebook that investigators would be looking at "Russian spy agencies' efforts to get rid of those who are trying to tell the truth about what is going on in Russia and Ukraine".

The State Security Service, or SBU, said Russian Federation had sought to pay $40,000 to assassinate Arkady Babchenko, who moved to Kiev past year following threats in his homeland.

Babchenko's wife is in a state of shock and police are unable to speak to her, he said.

He first moved to Prague and later to the Ukrainian capital.

Kiev police chief Andriy Kryshchenko also told the media they suspected Mr Babchenko was killed due to his "professional activities".

Ukrainian and Russian officials immediately traded finger-pointing over his "death".

Speaking to the BBC, Ukrainian police spokesman Yaroslav Trakalo confirmed Mr Babchenko's death.

He was shot him in the back several times. "Second birthday, it turns out", he wrote. He spoke and wrote about leaving the country because of the threats against him and his family.

Babchenko fought with the Russian army in Chechnya in the 1990s and went on to cover conflicts in Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia and Ukraine before leaving Moscow after a campaign of harassment past year.

According to the Moscow-based independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, where he had worked until 2011 as a war correspondent, Babchenko was shot in the back in the entrance of his Kiev home by an unknown assailant or assailants.

He described his experience in the Chechen conflicts - which saw Moscow suppress a separatist insurgency in the North Caucasus - in a book published in English under the title "One Soldier's War".

He then became a journalist, working for a number of different outlets.

Arkady Babchenko was a celebrated war reporter and a ferocious critic of the Kremlin.

Babchenko had been scathingly critical of the Kremlin in recent years.
