7 dead after Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupts

Local media reported earlier that the powerful eruption left at least six people dead and 20 more injured.

Firefighters in Guatemala say some people have been trapped by a deadly volcanic eruption but they have been forced to call off rescue efforts until morning over safety concerns.

Seven people have been killed and 20 hurt after a volcano near Guatemala City exploded in a fiery display of ash and lava.

Volcanic ash covers parked motorcycles, brought by the Fuego Volcano, in Antigua Guatemala.

National Disaster Coordinator Sergio Cabanas had previously confirmed that seven people were dead and an unknown number were unaccounted for. "There are injured, burned and dead people".

"It's a river of lava that overflowed its banks and affected the Rodeo village".

Ash was falling on the Guatemala City area as well as the departments of Sacatepequez, Chimaltenango and Escuintla, which are in south-central Guatemala around the volcano.

Dense ash blasted out by the volcano - which rises to 12,346 feet - also shut down Guatemala City's global airport, civil aviation said.

The runway was closed due to the presence of volcanic ash, Guatemala's civil aviation authority said in a tweet.

The conical Volcan de Fuego reaches an altitude of 12,346ft (3,763 meters) above sea level at its peak.

It's the second time this year it has erupted.

Workers and guests were evacuated from the La Reunion golf club near Antigua. A video circulating on social media showed a black cloud of ash rising from just beyond the golf club. "This is an terrible place to be, if you are ever around an erupting volcano like this and you see a cloud moving along the ground towards you, RUN".

BBC News reports officials advised residents to wear masks as ash fell.

Explosions are still coming from the volcano, said Eddy Sánchez, director of the National Institute for Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology of Guatemala known as INSIVUMEH.

David de León, spokesman for the disaster agency, said about 300 people had evacuated the area around the volcano.
